About this Course

If it’s time to renew your CPR certification, this short refresher is the ideal way to stay confident in CPR skills and knowledge and up to date with certification.

Through self-paced online pre-learning and our time-saving X-press practical sessions, you’ll revisit the essentials of responding to someone who’s unresponsive, practice effective CPR on adults and infants, use an AED, and place someone in the recovery position.

Our focus is on hands-on, real-world practice that keeps your skills sharp without wasting time. Complete the online theory when it suits you, and attend the X-press session your workplace or a public course.

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the CPR course and demonstrate competence in all assessments will promptly receive a digital Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation within 24 hours of finishing the course.

Prerequisites:
There are no specific prerequisites for the CPR course. However, participants must possess a basic level of literacy and numeracy to attend.

Please inform us in advance if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may affect your ability to complete practical assessments, including performing CPR on a manikin placed on the floor. It is mandatory to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin during the course.

Course Content

In this course, you’ll refresh and strengthen your CPR skills so you can act confidently in an emergency. You’ll learn how to recognise when someone isn’t breathing normally, follow the DRSABCD action plan, and perform high-quality CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

You’ll practice how to:

  • Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR (five cycles) on an adult manikin placed on the floor
  • Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR (five cycles) on an infant manikin on a firm surface
  • Use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) safely and follow its prompts
  • Manage an unconscious breathing casualty and place them in the recovery position
  • Respond appropriately to vomiting or regurgitation during resuscitation
  • Work as part of a rescue team, rotating roles with minimal interruptions to compressions
  • Take part in a realistic CPR scenario relevant to your workplace or community setting
  • Use safe manual handling techniques
  • Provide a clear verbal or written incident report after an emergency

You’ll also cover essential knowledge, including:

  • The ARC guidelines and your responsibilities under Australian first aid regulations and workplace procedures
  • Safe work practices to manage risks and hazards during CPR
  • Infection control principles, including standard precautions
  • How to maintain your CPR skills and stay current with the latest recommendations
  • Legal and ethical considerations, such as duty of care, consent, privacy and confidentiality
  • How to remain calm, respectful and supportive when assisting a casualty
  • The importance of debriefing and self-care after an emergency
  • Basic anatomy and physiology, including how to identify abnormal breathing and understand how body position affects airway and consciousness
  • The chain of survival and when to start, continue or stop CPR

Entry Requirements

Participants need to be physically capable of performing practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Prior to attending the face-to-face session, students may need to complete online pre-course work, depending on how the course is delivered.

For online study, students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with internet access to complete the pre-course studies.

Certificate Renewal

Certificates will require renewal after 12 months.

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Perform CPR on an infant

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
