Course Information

Acquire essential Emergency First Aid skills tailored for public settings, specifically designed for educators and support staff. This comprehensive training, includes a convenient pre-class component to ensure thorough preparation. Gain the critical ability to swiftly respond to diverse child emergencies, emphasizing the paramount importance of timely and effective intervention in safeguarding children’s health and well-being.

QUALIFICATION
Upon successful completion of the Childcare First Aid course and assessment of competency in all components, participants will receive a digital Statement of Attainment for the following certifications within 24 hours:
  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

There are no prerequisites for enrolling in the Childcare First Aid course. However, participants must have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to attend. If you have any medical conditions or special needs that may hinder your ability to complete practical assessments, including performing CPR on a manikin placed on the floor, please notify us. The course mandates performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on both adult and child resuscitation manikins positioned on the floor.

This course equips educators and support staff in education and care settings with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond to first aid emergencies involving infants, children, and adults. It includes handling situations such as asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

  • Explore essential first aid topics including stress management techniques and support options post-emergency
  • focusing on children’s psychological well-being.
  • Understand the anatomical and physiological considerations for providing first aid to infants and children.
  • Learn about the specific first aid requirements mandated by the Education and Care Services National Law.
  • Acquire skills in managing a range of conditions such as
  • abdominal injuries, chest injuries,
  • allergic reactions, asthma,
  • anaphylaxis, and more.
  • bandages and slings
  • handling fractures and dislocations,
  • managing bleeding, burns, bites, and stings.
  • Learn life-saving techniques like cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
  • managing choking and spinal injuries,
  • medical emergencies such as diabetes, drug overdoses,
  • eye and head injuries, poisoning, and stroke
  • Understand safety protocols for home and workplace environments, managing shock,
  • treating sprains, strains, and bruising, responding to traffic accidents,
  • providing care for unconscious casualties.
  • Be prepared to take decisive actions in emergencies and effectively communicate when seeking assistance.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
PREREQUISITES

This unit of competency has no prerequisites in order to enrol and is suitable for those with no prior skills or knowledge in first aid.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Demonstrate CPR procedures on an adult, including the use of an AED and placing the casualty into the recovery position.
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated emergency scenario.
  • Perform CPR on a child.
  • Perform CPR on an infant.
  • Handle a child experiencing anaphylaxis.
  • Handle a child experiencing an asthma attack.
  • Assist a choking child and infant.
  • Treat a child with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning.
  • Assist a child with a nosebleed. Handle a child with a fracture and dislocation.
  • Manage a child with a sprain or strain.
  • Treat a child envenomated by a snake or funnel-web spider bite.
