CPR Refresher Course Information

The CPR Refresher Course is designed to provide crucial training in life-saving techniques, focusing on identifying symptoms in unconscious individuals who are not breathing and the necessary steps to assist them. Participants will gain practical skills in handling emergencies, including using the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), performing adult and infant provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and placing individuals in the recovery position. This course offers a comprehensive learning experience by combining practical face-to-face classes with a flexible online pre-class component. With classes offered daily, we accommodate the busy schedules of participants, ensuring accessibility to essential life-saving skills for everyone. Additionally, our course is affordably priced to guarantee widespread access to this vital training.

QUALIFICATION

Participants who successfully complete the CPR course and demonstrate competence in all assessments will promptly receive a digital Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation within 24 hours of finishing the course.

Prerequisites:
There are no specific prerequisites for the CPR course. However, participants must possess a basic level of literacy and numeracy to attend.

Please inform us in advance if you have any medical conditions or special needs that may affect your ability to complete practical assessments, including performing CPR on a manikin placed on the floor. It is mandatory to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin during the course.

COURSE CONTENT

Performance Evidence:

Candidates must demonstrate their ability to perform tasks as outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, managing tasks and contingencies relevant to their job role. Evidence must show compliance with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, and workplace procedures. Specifically:

  • Application of DRSABCD in accordance with ARC guidelines, including
  • Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
  • Performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
  • Responding appropriately in case of regurgitation or vomiting.
  • Managing an unconscious breathing casualty.
  • Following single rescue procedure, including rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions.
  • Following prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • Responding to at least one simulated first aid scenario tailored to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, including:
  • Demonstrating safe manual handling techniques.
  • Providing an accurate verbal or written incident report.

Knowledge Evidence:

Candidates must demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively perform tasks outlined in the unit’s elements and performance criteria, managing tasks and contingencies within their work role. This includes knowledge of:

  • State/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, and workplace procedures, including:
  • ARC Guidelines relevant to CPR provision.
  • Safe work practices to mitigate risks and hazards.
  • Infection control principles and procedures, including standard precautions.
  • Requirements for maintaining current skills and knowledge.
  • Legal, workplace, and community considerations, such as:
  • Awareness of potential need for stress-management techniques and available support post-emergency.
  • Duty of care obligations.
  • Respectful behavior towards casualties.
  • Recognizing own skills and limitations.
  • Consent requirements.
  • Privacy and confidentiality obligations.
  • Importance of debriefing.

Considerations during CPR provision, including:

  • Airway obstruction related to body position.
  • Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR.
  • Correct usage of an AED.
  • Chain of survival principles.
  • Standard precautions.

Basic anatomy and physiology relevant to:

  • Identifying abnormal breathing.
  • Chest, response/consciousness, upper airway, and the impact of positional changes.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants need to be physically capable of performing practical demonstrations, including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Prior to attending the face-to-face session, students may need to complete online pre-course work, depending on how the course is delivered.

For online study, students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with internet access to complete the pre-course studies.

CERTIFICATE RENEWAL

Certificates will require renewal after 12 months.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Perform CPR on an infant

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
